Monkeypox is a rare disease that is spread through close contact with the skin. It is related to smallpox, although much milder and rarely fatal. Since it is spread through the skin, many cases occur after close, intimate encounters. There is a vaccine currently available for people who had close contact with monkeypox or are at high risk for contracting monkeypox. Vaccines are in limited supply and available through health departments in many states, including Montgomery County Health Department and Philadelphia Health Department.
